When ADHD Burnout Is Really Nervous System Overload

Summer is supposed to feel relaxing. But for many adults with ADHD or nervous system dysregulation, summer can instead become overwhelming. Why?

Changes in routine, travel, social events, disrupted sleep, heat, overstimulation, and increased demands on attention can all place additional stress on the nervous system — even during activities that are meant to be enjoyable.

Patients often describe feeling:

  • Exhausted despite getting rest
  • Emotionally reactive or easily overwhelmed
  • Mentally “fried” after social interaction
  • Unable to focus or recover
  • More anxious, irritable, or emotionally depleted

This is not always ‘just stress.’ In many cases, it may reflect nervous system overload.

Why Nervous System Overload Can Feel Like Burnout

When the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of activation, the body often struggles to regulate energy, attention, mood, sleep, and emotional resilience effectively.

Over time, even enjoyable experiences can begin to feel draining.

Many adults with ADHD also spend significant energy masking symptoms, managing stimulation, and trying to stay organized in environments that constantly compete for attention. Summer often increases those demands rather than reducing them.
