Hormone Replacement Therapy

Men’s hormone replacement therapy is a simple, effective strategy for achieving more youthful levels of testosterone, often improving many of the symptoms associated with aging.

Testosterone is a hormone which helps men maintain bone density, appropriate fat distribution, muscle strength and mass, facial and body hair, red blood cell production, sexual drive and sperm production, mood, and the confidence and drive that typically define men.

When male patients complain of reduced sexual drive, less energy, difficulty sleeping, memory issues, brain fog, emotional changes, or other physical changes, we often find that low testosterone is the cause. A simple blood test can diagnose low testosterone levels.

After testing plus a review of personal goals, lifestyle management, and health history, we create a customized treatment plan to help men restore testosterone levels. The most common therapies include injections, pellets and topicals.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile Dysfunction is the second most commonly reported issue in men, after low testosterone. It can be an emotional, sensitive topic for men, often significant enough that many worry about seeking treatment. Erectile Dysfunction is typically complex and has multiple causes, including low hormone levels, cardiovascular disease, nervous system conditions, reactions to medications, relationship and work related stress.

No two men are exactly the same, so we offer a tailored approach to treatment. Typically this involves a combination of hormone replacement therapy, regenerative injection therapies, and medication to promote better sexual health. Often after four to eight months of hormone replacement therapy and general lifestyle changes, less medication is needed.

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease is a condition where fibrous scar tissue develops in the penis causing curved and painful erections. This can prevent a quality sex life, increase risk for erectile dysfunction, and cause embarassament, stress and anxiety.

Fortunately, with injection therapies, treatment can be very effective. Our average reduction in curve is usually greater than 30%, decreasing pain and improving sex life quality. We use highly precise, guided injection treatments that soften or break up the fibrous scar tissue. These treatments are often done as a series over several months along with specific lifestyle modifications for best results.

Frequently-Asked Questions

How do I know if I have low testosterone?

Here’s a common list of complaints that may indicate low testosterone levels:

  • Changes in sexual function such as reduced sexual desire, fewer spontaneous erections, reduced interest and desire for sexual activity, or erectile dysfunction.
  • Physical changes such as increased body fat or difficulty losing weight
  • Less energy and a decline in sense of well-being
  • Lack of stamina with exercise
  • Difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep
  • Emotional changes such as nervousness, depression, and concentration problems
Does increasing age guarantee a naturally declining testosterone level?
Not necessarily. We’ve seen 90-year-old men with completely normal levels and teenagers with completely abnormal levels. That’s why lab tests are so important to provide data to determine actual vs. target levels.
What are the risks of testosterone therapy for normal aging?
Testosterone therapy is very safe if performed properly and monitored correctly, although there are some risks. The most common is an increased risk for clots. We monitor this and offer simple solutions for those at a higher risk.
What kind of injection therapies are used for treating ED?
We use Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), orthobiologic and adipose derived biocellular injection therapies to treat ED in our male patients. We are one of the leading experts in these therapies in the Portland area, having performed thousands of regenerative injection therapies including those for men’s sexual health and for erectile dysfunction.
How does it work?
Our injection therapies restore and remodel more normal and healthier tissues such as collagen, smooth muscle, nerves and especially the vascular components that are crucial for improved male performance. Our patients consistently report stronger, more reliable erections along with improved sensation, climax and even improvements in size.
How long is treatment, and is it painful?
From start to finish, most treatments take about 1.5 hours with the injection portion taking less than 5 minutes. We use a topical anesthetic which makes this a relatively painless procedure.
What should I expect immediately following treatment?
Most men have injection site soreness that is very mild and lasts less than a day. We recommend taking a 24-hour sexual hiatus before treatment to let the tissues compensate. Many of our male patients have reported their usual erection without discomfort on the same day as treatment.
How long before I see results and what do you recommend for optimizing results?
Some men show immediate results, though most men find improvements after several weeks. Typically, we see maximum results 3 – 4 months after performing the recommended series of treatments. Treatment outcomes generally last about a year.
